On becoming a Mechatronics undergrad

Published on Jan 25, 2024

I’ve started my degree in Mechatronics at the Chippewa Valley Technical College. This is a step towards a different career direction for me.

I prefer to have software development as a secondary trade, or a strong skill, instead of having it as my profession. It took a long time for this realization to emerge and fully materialize over the years, but it feels inevitable, as I chose to start a career in software development because, given my aptitudes, it was my best available option at the time, even though I did not see it as my "true calling". In hindsight, although the choice was motivated merely by convenience, I do not regret it. I was able to contribute a lot as a programmer, plus I got to meet many interesting folks throughout the globe. Alas, after several years, I now have more freedom and wisdom to pursue a meaningful career of my preference, convenience aside.

Indeed, I wish to start a career in Mechatronics. More specifically, I am aiming for a job in Industrial Automation or Robotics. Mechatronics' premise of handling all kinds of physical systems and devices, mechanical and/or electronic, has always been genuinely interesting to me, plus it aligns nicely with my own life goals.

I expect coding to be part of my future job, but only as a secondary activity to support the work in Mechatronics. Outside of that, while I'll still be active in the open-source community, my professional software development career is indefinitely paused.

Here’s to a brighter future ahead for my family, friends, and anyone who’s reading this. Cheers!
